On Saturday, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi told the US lawmakers that Pakistan is seeking a broad-based, strategic alliance with America that would include Afghanistan.
The foreign minister invited a group of 15 US legislators to visit Pakistan in June for consultations with their Pakistani counterparts and officials. They will consult on ways to boost bilateral relations during the virtual meeting with members of the House of Representatives and Senate.
Peace in Afghanistan; A Collective Responsibility
During the meeting, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said: “Peace in Afghanistan is a collective responsibility of all Afghan groups and key external stakeholders”. The Foreign Minister also stressed the importance of orderly and responsible withdrawal of the foreign forces.
Need of Comprehensive Ceasefire
Moreover, FM Qureshi stated that Pakistan will do all it can to promote a peaceful political settlement in Afghanistan. He underscored the imperative of reduction in the violence leading to a comprehensive ceasefire.
Furthermore, the minister also urged members of the House of Representatives and the Senate to promote regional commerce and development.
According to Dawn news, during the hearing, several US lawmakers and America’s chief negotiator for Afghanistan Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad; discussed Pakistan’s role in the Afghan Peace Process.
Additionally, Qureshi told reporters after the sessions that he will keep in touch with US senators. He will continue to update on the regional situation, particularly events in Afghanistan.
FM Qureshi stance on a political settlement is a great step towards regional peace. It will also help in shaping Pak-Afghan relations. Lastly, it will help in promoting a softer image of the region in the international arena.
